Mortal Kombat Action Figures

by mbodman

Mortal Kombat was created as a fighting video game by Ed Boon and Jon Tobias in 1992. It was originally produced by Acclaim Entertainment for home video use. Midway Games took over production and continued up to Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. In July of 2009 Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment maintained sole rights to production. There have been many games, films, animations and even a television series that have followed the original Mortal Kombat characters.

Mortal Kombat is essentially a fighting game which features five moves; high punch, low punch, high kick, low kick and block. The latest version gives each character three fighting styles; two unarmed styles and one weapon style. Most of the fighting styles are based on martial arts. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe used multiple moves instead of different fighting styles. Foe example, Baraka wields a retractable blade. The game is noted for extreme gore and violence especially enabling the player to create violent death scenes. Some examples include turning into an animal to kill the opponent, known as Anamility. For a game loser, you may be given the choice of Hari-Kari to end the gamer’s life. In Mortal Kombat II an unexpected twist to silent critics of the game's violence is to present your enemy with flowers or a present instead of killing them off.

The Mortal Kombat action figures were released by Hasbro Toy Company in 1994. Because the molds from the GI Joe series were used, the figures bear a resemblance. The original game began with three figures who essentially were identical except for their clothing; Scorpion wore yellow, Sub-Zero wore blue and Reptile was clothed in green.

The characters in Mortal Kombat are varied in background and skills. Smoke is a mysterious figure who materializes in a swirling shadow to confuse the opponent. Sonya Blade is a member of the Special Forces who never allows herself to give into her emotions. Rayden, god of thunder, descends to the Earth to help the cause of good. Johnny Cage is an action movie star trying to live up to his image. Kano belongs to the Black Dragon organization and is easily recognized by his bionic infra-red eye. Liu Kano enters tournament. opponents with his reptilian tongue. Shang Tsung is Grand Master of the Mortal Kombat tournament. Scorpion fights for vengeance for his family while little is known about Sub-Zero, a ninja assassin. Goro rounds out the list of characters.

Five companies are responsible for the Mortal Kombat action figures; Hasbro in 1994, Toy Island in 1996, Infinite Concepts in 1999, Palisades in 2000 and finally Jazwares in 2006. The following is a list of characters available by company:
